Elizabeth Montgomery Site Dedication
Elizabeth
Montgomery was born either April 13, 1933, according to her
studio biography and numerous interviews, or 1938, according
to her family and publicist. The daughter of actors Robert
Montgomery and Elizabeth Allen, she appeared in more than 250
live TV productions and two dozen theatrical and TV movies.
She was the last surviving regular cast member of her
long-running TV series "Bewitched," which ran from
1964 to 1972 on ABC, in which she played Samantha Stephens, a
witch married to a mortal man. The series was responsible for
five of her nine Emmy nominations, and it averaged a 22.6
rating and 35% audience share for its entire eight-year run,
and was the number one show for four of those years. Until
the advent of Happy Days, it was the network's highest-rated
half-hour prime-time series ever aired. It's 254 episodes
continue to air the world over. 
Elizabeth's
television debut was on her father's drama series Robert
Montgomery Presents, although she had previously played
ingenues on broadway. In addition, she played on series such
as The Untouchables, for which she won her first Emmy
nomination. Her first theatrical movie was The Court Martial
of Billy Mitchell, with Gary Cooper, followed a few years
later by Johnny Cool, starring Sammy Davis, Jr., followed by
Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed, with Dean Martin.
She
was married four times, first to Fred Cammann, second to
actor Gig Young and third to William Asher, who produced
Bewitched, among other shows. Liz and Bill Asher divorced
amicably in the mid-70's. They had three children, William,
Jr., Robert and Rebecca. In 1975 she moved in with actor
Robert Foxworth and they married some years later.
Lizzie,
as she preferred to be called, was a staple of TV drama for
20 years. She preferred movies with a message, and throughout
her career fought intolerance and prejudice. She rarely
attended show business functions, but regularly appeared at
benefits. Among her personal crusades was AmFAR, The American
Foundation for AIDS research and she regularly supported
liberal causes. In March, 1995, she was diagnosed with cancer
and, after a short illness of only eight weeks, died on May
18, 1995.
